The commune is part of the magnificent Sundgau landscape, with its forests and ponds. The name Chavannes is first mentioned at the end of the 13th century. It was Germanised to Gross Schaffnatt during Austrian rule between 1347 and 1648. Throughout this period and until the French Revolution, the village was part of the seigneury of Montreux.
