On the path of the monks of Cluny
On the path of the monks of Cluny
Details
Froidefontaine's origins date back to around 1100, when monks from Cluny established a priory in a marshy area. All that remains of the Benedictine monastery church is the Romanesque apse dating from the 12th century. Three human heads can be seen on the cornice. The 17th-century bell tower was, at the time, incorporated into the college run by the Jesuits. The tombstones on either side of the portal date from 1750.
