Concert offered as part of the Vocalises-Belfort 2024 season by the Ensemble Arcanes.
The religious hymn of the Stabat Mater celebrating the compassion of the Virgin is attributed to the Franciscan poet Jacopone Todi around 1300. From the 16th century onwards, composers appropriated the poem and set it to music in the form of large-scale vocal polyphony. Subsequently, under the impetus of spiritual concerts, scores dedicated to the Stabat Mater proliferated until the 20th century.
