Regards sur le monde flottant. La collection d’estampes japonaises de Camille Lefèvre
Details
An exhibition devoted to Japanese prints and their reception in France in the 19th century, featuring a large part of the Japanese holdings of the municipal collections. The collection includes around a hundred prints and crepons donated to the town by sculptor and collector Camille Lefèvre (1853-1933) in 1932, as well as remarkable items of weaponry: katanas, tsubas and a samurai suit of armour that entered the collections in 1909.
The exhibition looks back at the context in which these prints were produced in Japan, and looks at the enthusiasm in the West at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century for these works, which opened a window on the distant archipelago. Discover several volumes of Hokusai's Manga, prints by Toyokuni, Kuniyoshi and Eizan, as well as prints by better-known masters such as Utamaro and Hiroshige. Without leaving Belfort, the exhibition will take you on a journey through the landscapes of Japan, to the green houses of high-ranking courtesans, to the halls of kabuki theatres to meet the great actors of the Edo period, and into the world of the samurai.
> Free guided tours of the exhibition every first Sunday of the month at 2.30pm.
All events must be booked in advance.
